1 10-C- OBITUARIES Narlie Roberts, entrepreneur Entrepreneur Narlie Roberts liked to build things and loved to watch them grow. That wincluded rights for blacks, as well as a chain. of McDonald's that he started with one restaurant. There is a connection. The first McDonald's made available to Roberts Roberts Mr.
Roberts through the efforts of local civil rights groups. In 1970, a coalition of 14 civil rights groups who wanted McDonald's to franchise to blacks began picketing several restaurants. They were so effective that a restaurant at 13705 Euclid East Cleveland, was sold. That's when Mr. Roberts, a black and owner of a construction business, stepped in and bought it.
He went on to buy seven other McDonald's and the North Shore Inn, now a Best Western Hotel, in Euclid. Mr. Roberts, 56, died in his sleep yesterday at the Best Western. He was born in Allendale, S.C., and moved to Cleveland in 3 1952. He organized Lath and Plastering Co.
with his brother-in-law Eugene They had $250 each and started the business at home. It grew and employed 125 plasterers, lathers and laborers. They were hired to work on the Chesterfield Apartments. Cleveland Public Utility Building and projects at Kent State and Akron universities. :3 With a cash surplus, Mr.
Roberts bought his first McDonald's and took a management training course at Hamburger University the only college which he was ever duated. The fast-food business then became his ballgame. By the end of 1972 he sold his interest in and devoted his time and money to expanding in McDonald's restaurants. They were managed by his flagship company, Royal Ridge Management which has recorded gross annual sales in excess of $10 million every year since 1979. He received the Ronald McDonald Award in 1976 for making major contributions to the community.
His chain of restaurants was often listed as one of the top 100 black businesses in the United States by Black Enterprise magazine. Mr. Roberts was honored at the White House by President Jimmy Carter at a Black Enterprise Top 100 reception and was again honored by President Reagan at the Congressional Black Caucus conference. His efforts to forward civil rights are reflected in The Advertising Connection, one of the largest full-service minorityowned advertising agencies in Ohio, which he helped establish along with Capital for Minority Business Enterprises Inc. After buying out his last year for $300,000, he was awarded the Best Western franchise rights for the North Shore Inn in September.
Mr. Roberts has received numerous awards including the Minority 100 Business Achievement Award Forum '80 from former Gov. James A. Rhodes. He was a member of the Black McDonald Operators Association, in Ohio and nationally, and a member of the Urban League, the Business League and the Lee Road Community Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; daughters, Yvonne, Julie and Mary; sons, Michael and Turan; and five grandchildren. Services will be at noon Tuesday at the Lee Road Community Church, 4612 Lee Cleveland. Arthur Ftacnik union organizer As the son of a union coal miner in Caldwell, 0.. Arthur Paul Ftacnik learned what hard labor and poor working conditions could do to a man. Years later, when he founded the Aircraft Workers Alliance, the first union at TRW memories of his father prompted him to push for job security, a sanitary work environment and early retirement.
EN As the union's negotiator for 33 years. he urged fair play on both sides while practicing a philosophy of being reasonable, but tough. During that time the 1. union never went on strike. Mr.
Ftacnik, 73, of North Royalton, died of a stroke at Parma Community General Hospital yesterday morning. He was born in Caldwell and left school after the 10th-grade. Shortly afterward, he moved to the Cleveland area and began working at TRW. Pr After co-founding the Aircraft Workers Alliance in 1942, Mr. Ftacnik became its first vice president and later chief union steward for 28 years in the TRW Valve Division until he retired in 1974.
After his retirement, Mr. Ftacnik enjoyed some of his favorite pastimes hunting and fishing. He loved to catch walleye in Lake Erie and Canada and was noted in the area for winning a number of fishing awards. He also killed over 60 deer in his lifetime as a member of a hunting camp, in western Pennsylvania. shot turkey and big game as well.
He was a past president of the North Royalton's Sportsman Association and a member of St. Albert the Great Church in North Royalton. He is survived by his wife. Pauline; sons. Jerry, of Brunswick, and Arthur Jr.
of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Albert the Great Church at 6667 Wallings North Royalton. Philip Heil moving firm exec Philip J.
Heil father started the family moving business with a horse and buggy in 1907. By the time Mr. Heil retired in 1986. Heil Windermere Storage and Moving Co. had become an agent for Allied Van Lines and was one of the oldest moving businesses in Cleveland.
But Mr. Heil, 73, never really did retire. In fact, he died Thursday while driving to his South Euclid home after doing some work at the family business. When asked about his hobbies. he said he had only one the Heil Windermere Storage and Moving Co.
Mr. Heil. born in Cleveland, was a 1933 graduate of Cathedral Latin School and attended John Carroll University for two years. After graduation from high DEATHS ELSEWHERE FROM WIRE REPORTS NAPLES, Italy Joseph J. Favorite, who for 35 years served as a spokesman and press liaison for the Southern European Allied Forces, died at 66.
Favorite, who was born in Minneapolis, was adviser and public affairs officer for a succession of NATO commanders. NIEUWEGEIN. Netherlands Bernhard Alfrink, the reform -minded archbishop who Roman Catholic Church through the turbulent 1960s and 1970s. died at 87. As a school, he started working for his father as a warehouse worker and mover, when the business was called the Windermere Transfer Co.
He worked his way up to secretary-treasurer before retiring. After that, he worked off and on in the operations department. Mr. Heil, served in the Army from 1940-45, was stationed in Africa, France and Sicily. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern ribbon with eight battle stars.
He belonged to St. Philomena Catholic Church and the East Cleveland Fraternal Order of Police Association. Mr. Heil is survived by his wife, Margaret; sons, Philip Jr. and Stephen; daughters, Arlene Placek and Sheila Ferguson, and six grandchildren.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at St. Philomena, 13824 Euclid East Cleveland. mediator between the Vatican and his reform-minded flock in the Netherlands, Alfrink led his church though one of its stormiest periods since the Protestant Reformation. He sponsored the Dutch Pastoral Council to bring bishops, priests and laymen together in open dialogue.
